Best golf bets & expert advice for the WM Phoenix Open

‘The Greatest Show on Grass’ takes place in Arizona this week in the latest event on the PGA Tour, with a star-studded field set to battle it out for the WM Phoenix Open title on the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale.

World number one Scottie Scheffler has claimed the spoils the last two years and victory this week would see him join Arnold Palmer as the only player to have won this title three times in a row.

The 27-year-old American finished tied-sixth at the weather-affected AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and he is the 5/1 favourite to complete the three-peat, ahead of compatriot Justin Thomas at 10/1.

Max Homa (14/1), Sam Burns (16/1) and Jordan Spieth (18/1) are all prominent in the betting, while Australian Min Woo Lee is 28/1 and Pebble Beach champion Wyndham Clark is priced at 30/1.

WM Phoenix Open: Wyndham Clark to win & each-way @ 28/1

Wyndham Clark arrives in Arizona having been crowned the AT&T Pebble Beach champion, his third PGA Tour title in the space of nine months and he currently occupies a career-high world ranking of sixth.

The 30-year-old’s confidence is sky high and the fact he only had to play three rounds to land the title at Pebble Beach, with the tournament curtailed early due to bad weather, means he arrives here fresh and raring to go.

Clark shot a sensational 12-under-par 60 on Saturday to climb into the lead on -17 and that proved to be the winning score, with the field not returning to the course after the conclusion of the third round.

The 2023 US Open champion has had five previous cracks at the Phoenix Open and it’s pleasing to see that his best finish of 10th came here last year, which turned out to be the start of a fantastic run of form.

Odds of 30/1 seem very generous for the in-form American and with five places on offer at a quarter of the odds with talkSPORT BET, he is the headline selection.

WM Phoenix Open: Hideki Matsuyama to win & each-way @ 35/1

The second player to keep an eye out for this week is Hideki Matsuyama, who has endured an up-and-down couple of years due to injury, but he will be hoping a clean bill of health can see him climb back up the rankings.

Currently 54th in the world, everyone knows the quality the Japanese possesses, with his 2021 Masters triumph and seven other PGA Tour titles highlighting this.

The 31-year-old was fourth and second on his first two Phoenix Open appearances before then landing back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017, both of those victories coming via a play-off.

Matsuyama’s six outings at the Stadium Course since read WD-15-16-42-8-29, so he clearly has a liking for this layout.

Therefore, it would be no surprise to see him content again, especially if he can rediscover the form that produced a T13 at the Farmers Insurance Open recently.
