Kelvin Kiptum, World Marathon Record Holder, Dead At 24

Kelvin Kiptum had run three of the seven fastest marathons in history.

World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana were killed in a fatal road accident in Kenya, Kenyan media outlet The Standard Digital reported, citing the athlete’s family and traffic base commandant Dennis Muga.

The accident happened along Eldoret-Kaptagat road in the southwestern part of the country, according to the report. He was 24.

Kiptum and his coach , Rwanda’s Gervais Hakizimana, reportedly died in a traffic accident on Monday. The accident occurred on Sunday at 11pm, according to Elgeyo Marakwet Police Commander Peter Mulinge.

Kiptum was driving a Toyota Premio with two passengers on board- Garvais and a lady identified as Sharon Kosgey.

Sharon sustained severe injuries and was promptly transported to Racecourse Hospital for medical treatment, while the athlete and his coach’s bodies were taken to the Racecourse Hospital mortuary.

The vehicle suffered extensive damage and was subsequently towed to Kaptagat Police Station.

“This was a self-involved accident where one Kelvin Kiptum, the world marathon record holder, was driving his vehicle with two passengers. Kiptum and Hakizimana died on the spot and the third person was rushed to Racecourse Hospital in Eldoret,” said the County Commander.

Kiptum’s meteoric rise to marathon stardom had garnered him quite a lot of fans. Tributes poured in for his and Hakizimana’s family as news of their passing spread online. Fans took to social media to give their condolences to the family and to express their own grief at having lost a star so young.

After twice clocking two hours and one minute for the minute, in 2022 and 2023, Kiptum shattered Kenyan icon Eliud Kipchoge’s world record of 2:01:09.

Kiptum’s remarkable ascent, coupled with Kipchoge’s enduring excellence, even in his 30’s, had created great anticipation for the marathon event at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
