Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers has expressed his desire to play with the New York Jets next season.
One problem with that scenario is that Rodgers’ current team, the Green Bay Packers, has Rodgers under contract. Rodgers won’t get to play for the Jets unless the Packers agree to trade him there.
What the Packers will accept for Rodgers, who views himself as the greatest player in franchise history, is an ongoing topic of debate.
ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter detailed the current conundrum Wednesday morning during a live hit on the network.
.@AdamSchefter on what’s holding up Rodgers becoming a Jet:
“The Green Bay Packers aren’t going to be in a rush to get something done until they feel like they get sufficient compensation for the player that believes he is the greatest player in Packers’ franchise history.” pic.twitter.com/u9zv2VrsHI

Schefter admitted that “negotiations can change” in an instant, but as of right now, the Packers and the Jets remain “far apart” on any deal that would send Rodgers to the Big Apple.
“The Green Bay Packers aren’t going to be in a rush to get something done until they feel like they get sufficient compensation for the player that believes he is the greatest player in Packers’ franchise history,” Shefter said. “… [The Packers] believe there is a premium to be paid for that. When you look at the landscape of what other quarterbacks in recent trades in recent years have fetched, it’s been a lot.”
Whether that deal materializes remains to be seen. But the NFL world was quick to react to the news:
Watch Aaron Rodgers retire after all of this

What leverage does Green Bay have? If they don’t trade him, he retires and counts 60mill against the cap

The salary cap relief IS the compensation… 🤷🏼♂️

This is smart for the packers. They hold all the leverage here
