Where Is The Masters Played? Augusta National, Amen Corner Info

Next week the Masters tees off for the first golf major of 2023. But where is the famous tournament played? Here is everything you need to know about Augusta National.

Where Is The Masters Played?

The Masters is played at Augusta National Golf Club, commonly referred to as Augusta. The course, located in Augusta, Georgia, was designed by Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1932.

The annual Masters tournament has been played every year since 1934 (except 1943-45 due to World War 2) and is the only major championship played each year at the same course.

Augusta is widely regarded as one of the most famous courses in golf alongside the likes of St. Andrews and Pebble Beach.

What Is Amen Corner And What Makes It So Difficult?

The course, which was bought by Bobby Jones and others for $15,000 in 1931, holds arguably the most problematic three-hole stretch in golf which has ended the aspirations of many Masters hopefuls over the years.

Amen Corner, comprised of the 11th, 12th and 13th hole, is renowned for its difficulty – best experienced by 2015 winner Jordan Spieth a year later in 2016. Two of Speith’s balls found water on the par three 12th on his way to making a quadruple bogey and finishing three shots behind eventual winner Danny Willett.

Hole 11 – White Dogwood

The 11th hole begins Amen Corner and the tee shot plays downhill, left to right. A par four at 520 yards long, immediate danger surrounds the flagstick. To the left of the green is a pond, and to the right a bunker. Larry Mize famously chipped-in to beat Greg Norman in a playoff during the 1987 Masters on this hole.

Hole 12 – Golden Bell

The 12th at Augusta is probably golf’s most famous hole. It is the shortest par three on the course and wind is often a significant factor for players when choosing what club to hit.

Varying winds mean anything from a six-iron to a nine-iron can be required, providing potential headaches in those conditions. Good luck if you hit any of the three bunkers surrounding the green.
